Hendee and Carl Oscar Hedstrom started the Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield Mass. In 1901 "The first Indian" was born. 1.75 hp, all chain drive moves at 25mph. In 1923 the Indian Motocycle Company was officially formed. Funny without the "r", but I suppose there had to be a reason...huh? The company went in and out of trouble and had many ups and downs. But by 1999 the Indian Motorcycle Company was back in business producing motorcycles that will rival the best built bikes around. They started with the ever classic Chief and have since launched 3 more bikes. The Scout, The Spirit and the Powerplus 100. Pretty great american story. Indian Chief® |
